Full Name: Daniel Butterfield (circa 1866)

Rank: Major General

Description/History:
A mid-chest pose of Butterfield who first entered the war
as a 1st sergeant only to be quickly appointed colonel
of the 12th New York State Militia. His regiment was the
first Union unit to enter Virginia on May 24, 1861.
Commanding a brigade during the Peninsular Campaign,
he was wounded at the battle of Gaines Mills in 1862.
Thirty years later he was awarded the MOH for
conspicuous service displayed during that battle.
As a major general, he was chief of staff under both
Generals Hooker, and Meade.
During the battle of Gettysburg he was severely wounded,
and was carried from the field.
He is credited with composing “Taps”, and of implementing
the use of corps badges.
