Full Name: John R. Groo (circa 1864)

Rank: 1st Lieut. 143rd New York Vols.

Description/History:
Seated pose of Groo, with sword, who enlisted in 1862
as a 2nd lieutenant, and served with his regiment during
the Chattanooga campaign, the Atlanta campaign,
and during Sherman’s March to the Sea. He was discharged
for disability less than a month before the war’s ended,
on March 20, 1865. Period ink ided on the verso as:
“Lt. Groo, 127th N. Y.” by a person who unwittingly
misidentified his regiment. Records show that there was
only one Groo listed who was an officer in the entire
Union army.

Condition: Slightly clipped corners with some spotting,
and soiling, affecting the albumen, else very good.
