Description/History:
Full standing view of Stedman who wears his field officers combat sword, and belt with sash. He helped lead the regiment twice, once during their nine-month term of service seeing action during the Vicksburg campaign, and again a second call to service in 1864. He was one of the first men to answer his countrys call, enlisting in the 6th Mass. Vols. in 1861. Immediately after the surrender of Fort Sumter, President Lincoln called upon the regiment to defend Washington. On April 19, 1861, while transferring trains in Baltimore, the regiment was attacked in that citys streets by an angry mob, and the unit was forced to open fire upon the hysteric throng of people.
