Full Name: 16th New York Volunteers (Spring 1862)

Rank: N/A

Description/History:
A great outdoor view by Matthew Brady showing a group
of well-armed soldiers of the 16th N. Y. Vols. photographed
during May 1862. Interestingly, each man wears a white
straw hat that was a gift to the regiment by the colonel’s
wife. They first wore these hats into combat at the battle
of Gaines Mills, Va., on June 27, 1862.
Soon after the battle all the hats (or more aptly targets)
were discarded after the regiment sustained 228 casualties.
The regiment fought throughout the remainder of the
Seven Days campaign, and also saw action at Fredericksburg,
and Chancellorsville.
