Description/History:

  • Served in the Mexican War.
  • Aide de Camp to Winfield Scott, 1847.
  • Severely wounded in the left arm,
    that required amputation, at the battle of
    Churubusco, Mexico, August 20, 1847.
  • Member of the French Imperial Guard, 1859 – 1861.
  • Brigadier General USV, May 1861.
  • Army of the Potomac,
    August 1861 – September, 1862.
  • In 1862 introduced the first application
    of the Corps Badge.
  • Wounded in the chest at the battle
    of Charles Cross Roads, Va., June 30, 1862.
  • Major General USV, (posthumously), July, 1862.
  • Killed in action during the battle of Chantilly, Va.,
    during a downpour, September, 1862.
