Description/History:
Commissioned a brigadier general in August 1861,
he commanded a division in Sumner’s II Corps
during the Peninsular Campaign, and was wounded
during the battle of Frayser’s Farm on June 30, 1862.
The following month he was promoted to major
general, and was subsequently wounded three times
during the battle of Antietam. After recovering he led
the VI Corps at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and during
the opening of Grant’s Overland Campaign only to be
killed instantly by a Confederate sharpshooter during
firing along the lines at Spotsylvania May 9, 1864.
