Description/History:
C(1802-1878) A nice seated pose of Lincolns one and only
secretary of the navy originally taken by Brady during
February 1861. As one of our more charismatic naval chiefs
to fill the post, he took an ill-equipped and undermanned
navy from a demoralized state in 1861 to one of water
superiority by 1862. At the end of the Civil War the
department boasted over 700 vessels including approximately
sixty ironclads, making our navy second only in size to Great
Britains. He continued as secretary of the navy under Johnson
after Lincolns assassination, and retired March 4, 1869
making his tenure in the office the longest in American history.
