Description/History:
(1823-1885) A good vignette bust view of Colfax who
was elected as Speaker of the House on Dec. 5, 1863.
He held that position until his vice presidency in 1869.
A good friend of Lincoln, he considered Feb. 1, 1865
the happiest day of his life after he signed the
Thirteenth Amendment into effect. A good friend of the
presidents he was one of the last people to shake
Lincolns hand on the day of his assassination.
Opposed to Johnsons Reconstruction plans in the
following years, he voted against the beleaguered
president during his impeachment. Colfax failed in
his bid for a second term as vice president, and retired
from public life. He died of a heart attack while walking
to a train in temperatures reaching thirty degrees below
zero at Mankato, Minnesota on Jan. 13, 1885.
