Full Name: Charles L. Barnes (ca. 1862-63)

Rank: Hospital Steward, Co. B, 15th Conn. Vols.

Description/History:

A rare seated view of Barnes who enlisted July 18, 1862
as a private. On April 6, 1863, he was promoted to the
rank of hospital steward. He appears in front of camp
scene backdrop wearing a four-button sack coat with
distinctive medical corps insignia on the sleeves, and
for inclement weather, an oilcloth covered kepi.
His armrests on a U. S. flag draped table. Barnes
served throughout the war, and was mustered out
June 27, 1865. Period pencil inscription on verso,
reads: “Charley Barnes a Plantsville neighbor.”

Condition: Copy image from tintype,
rounded lower margins with little albumen
loss at right left edge. Overall very good.
