Description/History:
A seated view shows Bowditch wearing a nine-button
frock coat. He enlisted in November 1861 as a 2nd lieut.,
and promoted the 1st lieutenant on June 28, 1863.
During the Mine Run campaign, he was wounded in the
arm while leading a charge during the battle of New Hope
Church, Va., Nov. 11, 1863. During March 1864 he
resigned to become major of the newly formed 5th Mass.
(Colored) Cavalry, and resigned June 3, 1865 after
serving for over a year with Americas first buffalo soldiers.
